Venmo is a popular digital wallet and payment platform that is used by millions of people worldwide. It allows users to send and receive money from friends and family quickly and easily. One of the most common questions people have about Venmo is if they can use their credit cards on the platform. The answer is yes, you can use your credit card with Venmo. This article will discuss how to use a credit card on Venmo.
What is Venmo?
Venmo is a service that enables you to make payments and money requests to friends. Basically, Venmo offers a more social approach to paying those you owe by combining regular money transfer features with social media elements.
With Venmo, you can send money from your bank account to other users or receive funds from them into your bank account. It also helps you use your contact information such as phone numbers, email addresses and even Facebook friend lists to issue payments.
How does Venmo work with Credit Cards
Venmo enables you to connect your bank account and move money back and forth so that it’s where you want it when you want it. You can use it to receive payments and also make payments either with the money in your Venmo account, or from a funding source you’ve connected, like a debit card.
The app allows you to share the payments you make to friends, family or approved businesses with a comment, just like the way you make a typical social media post. Venmo is available in the US only.
Venmo Credit Card
The Venmo Credit Card is a Visa branded credit card integrated into the Venmo experience you know and love. With the Venmo Credit Card, you can manage your credit card account right from the Venmo app. The front of the card is printed with your personal Venmo QR code which makes activation a snap and friends can scan the QR code to take them right to your Venmo profile. The Venmo Credit Card allows you to make contactless payments, split your credit card purchases with friends on Venmo, request new virtual card numbers, earn cash back rewards on your purchases*.
What is a Venmo balance?
The Venmo balance is simply the money in your Venmo account that you received from friends, family, etc. and haven’t spent or transferred to a bank account. You can see this balance on your profile page.
Within the Venmo app, you can see your balance when you scroll to the top of your personal transactions on the right of your friends feed or when you tap on your profile photo ― in the upper left corner.
Once you verify your identity, you’ll be able to use your Venmo balance to make payments to friends. This money can also be used at the checkout of apps and mobile websites that are authorized to receive payments through Venmo.
Keep in mind that the Venmo balance can only be used if it’s enough to cover the payment. Otherwise, Venmo will resort to your other specified payment methods ― like a debit or credit card.

How fast do I get my referral reward after my Venmo friend is approved for the Venmo Credit Card?
If your Venmo friend uses your referral link to apply for the Venmo Credit Card from a mobile device in the Venmo app (app version 9.7 or greater) within 14 days of the creation of the referral link and is subsequently approved for the card, you will be sent a notification about your referral reward and receive it (if you haven’t already received the maximum) within approximately 24 hours, but it may take up to 2 weeks. Due to the confidential nature of the credit approval process, we will not disclose any information to you about who has applied.

You can invite your Venmo friends to apply for the Venmo Credit Card from a mobile device in the Venmo app (app version 9.7 or greater) by tapping the “Share your link” button on the Venmo Credit Card referral offer screen in the Venmo app or as otherwise communicated to you.

How to Cancel Venmo Credit Card
Firstly, you need to empty the account and move all the remaining amount elsewhere. You can return them to the original sender or move them to your bank account. This is because account cancellation doesn’t automatically send these funds to your bank account.
You’d have to contact Venmo for you to gain access to the money if you close the account without removing it. In order to do so, you have to follow the steps below:
- Select Transfer Money, or Transfer Balance at the top of your transactions feed. Alternatively, choose the Manage Balance option and hit Transfer to Bank.
- Enter the amount to be transferred
- Select the transfer mode; Instant or 1-3 business days
- Confirm the transfer details and tap Transfer
Secondly, it is important to resolve any incomplete transactions before closing your account. You’ll actually be sent a prompt to address those transactions once you attempt to delete your account.
To delete your account via a web browser:
- Go to the bottom of your profile section and select Cancel my Venmo Account
- Click Next
- Review the most recent statement presented to you
- Once you’ve finished reviewing it, click Close Account
- Check your email for a goodbye message from Venmo with your transaction history
At the moment, it’s not possible to cancel your account from the mobile app.
If you’re responsible for managing a deceased person’s account and you have their log in details, you can:
- Log in to their account from a computer and follow the same steps listed above
- In case you have their username but no password, you can use the Reset Password option and get into their email to reset it
- If you have their phone, you can access the account through the app and change the login details. You can then return to the computer and delete the account
How to Remove your bank details and saved cards on Venmo
To remove bank details and registered cards you’ll need to follow the steps below on the app:
- Hit the menu button (the one with three horizontal lines in the top left corner of the app screen).
- Select Settings and continue to Payment Methods
- Choose the payment method you want to remove and click on Remove (below the account/card name).
- You’ll receive a confirmation prompt asking Remove Bank and you should proceed to tap the button once you’re sure
If you opt to do this process through a computer, you’ll have to:
- Click Edit Payment Method” below the list of payment methods
- Select the payment method you want to remove
- Tap on Remove, after that you can click on the final confirmation button
After removing the payment options, you’ll be able to proceed with deleting your Venmo account.
Once you’ve decided to delete your Venmo account, it’s not advisable to go straightaway to the cancellation option. Remember that if you close an account without unlinking a payment method, you may have trouble linking it to a new account if you decide to set up one.
You’ll also have to go through a lengthy process to remove any money that you left in the account. Additionally, it helps to go through your transactions to make sure that you don’t have funds that are still on the way to the recipient.
Aside from the ones tracked within your account, take a moment to remember whether you had instructed anyone to pay you through Venmo. If you’re still expecting any payments from a friend that are yet to be initiated or in the transfer window, it might be good to hold off on closing the account. All-in-all, make sure you don’t have any unfinished business.
In conclusion, it is possible to use credit cards on Venmo. However, you should be aware of some restrictions for all payments made with a credit card. Additionally, the Venmo app does not support pre–paid credit cards. For those looking for the convenience that comes with using a credit card on Venmo, it is possible, but be aware of the restrictions and fees associated with it.
