Requirements for Using Venmo
There are four main requirements for using Venmo:
- You must be physically located in the United States
- You must have a U.S. cell phone that can send/receive text messages from short codes (please note that this phone number can not be on file with another Venmo account)
- You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your state of residence)
- Your Venmo app must be updated to version 7.38.2 or newer
If you ever want to transfer money from your Venmo account to your bank account (most users do), you need to add a U.S. bank account or debit card eligible for Instant Transfer. If you don’t have access to a Venmo balance, you’ll need to add a U.S. bank account, credit card, or debit card to make a payment.
How Does Venmo Work?
At its heart, Venmo is a cash-free way of sending and receiving money. For instance, you can use Venmo to split a dinner tab with a coworker, pay for your portion of a taxi ride you shared with your aunt or send your half of the monthly rent to your roommate.

What Does It Cost To Use Venmo?
Venmo doesn’t hit customers with monthly or annual fees. Furthermore, it doesn’t charge for basic services such as:
- Sending money from a linked bank account, a linked debit card or your Venmo account
- Accepting money that goes into your Venmo account or withdrawing money from the account
- Making a standard transfer to your linked bank account
However, Venmo charges for some premium features and other services. These include:
- A 3% fee when you use your credit card to send money to someone
- A 1% fee (with a $5 minimum) for using the check-cashing feature for faster deposits of payroll and government checks
- A 5% fee (with a $5 minimum) for using the check-cashing feature for faster deposits of non-payroll and non-government checks
- A 1.5% fee (minimum 25 cents, maximum $15) for instantly transferring money from your Venmo account to your eligible linked debit card or bank account
- Fees ranging from 50 cents to 2.3% for buying and selling cryptocurrencies
How to Sign Up for Venmo
■ Download and open the Venmo app on your iPhone or Android.
■ You will see two options at the bottom, “Sign up with Facebook” or “Sign up with email.” Choose one.
■ If you select Facebook, the app does the work for you, and you only need to click continue and give the app the proper permissions. If you select email, you will be prompted to enter your first and last name, email, and password. Fill in the information.
■ Venmo will now give you information about how it works. Scroll down and read as much as you feel you need to, then, when you’re done, tap “Next” at the bottom.
■ Read the User Agreement and Privacy Policy to your satisfaction, then tap “Next” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
■ You will be prompted to enter your phone number so that Venmo can send you a confirmation code.
■ A four digit confirmation code will be sent to your phone via text. Enter it into the box, then hit “Submit Code.”
You can also add a photo or change your automatically generated username if you’d like, or do this later.
Venmo sign up with email
After you sign up, and any other time your update your email address, we’ll send a message to the email address that you entered. Click the link in the email to verify ownership of your email address, and you’re all set.
It’s important to complete this step as soon as possible after updating your email address. Doing so helps to ensure that you can keep receiving payments and important notifications about your Venmo account.
Replying directly to the verification email will not verify your email address. If you’re not seeing the email, try searching your inbox for Venmo and check your spam or junk folder.
Verifying a secondary email address
If you were paid using a different email address from the one associated with your account, you can verify an additional email address from the web. This will also work if you did not verify your primary email address when signing up. Sign in, then enter your email address and click Verify. A new email should be sent to you with a verification link.
Venmo sign up with phone number
When you create your Venmo account, you’ll be presented with the option to sign up for just a personal account or both a business profile and a personal account. With either option, you’ll need to verify your phone number at the beginning of the sign-up process.

- In the Venmo app, go to the Me tab by tapping your picture or initials

- Select Account
- Tap Phone Number and enter your number again
I’m having trouble verifying my phone number on Venmo
If your phone verification attempts aren’t working, try any of these tips:
- Click Resend Code if your phone is unable to receive messages from short codes.
- Text the word “START” to the number 86753 to ensure you’re allowing text messages from Venmo.
- Try logging into Venmo from a different computer with your email address and password, which will require verification via SMS code (Successfully logging in on a computer using an SMS code will also verify your phone number automatically)
- Finally, be sure you have messaging from short codes enabled with your phone provider

How to sync contacts on Venmo
After entering your information, you’ll then be able to sync contacts from Facebook or your phone in order to pay friends easily.
■ If you did not sign up with Facebook earlier in the process, you will be prompted to link your account. Select “Not Now” or “OK.”
■ Tap “Next” to select phone contacts to sync. If you would not like to sync any contacts at this time, simply select “Skip” in the upper right-hand corner.
■ Scroll through the privacy information by swiping left until you get to the screen that says “You’re in control.” Then tap “Done” in the upper right-hand corner.
How to connect your bank on Venmo
Now that you’ve set up your Venmo account, you should add your bank information to send or receive payments.
■ To sync your bank information, tap the three lines in the upper left-hand corner of the home screen, then tap “Transfer Balance,” displayed in blue at the top of the menu.
■ Select either “Instant” or “1-3 biz days” on the Balance screen.
■ A new menu labeled “Bank Verification” will pop up at the bottom of the screen. If you have an account with a major national bank, you can select “Instant Verification” and simply sign into your bank’s website to connect to Venmo. If you have an account with a smaller bank, like a local credit union, you may need to select “Manual Verification” to enter your bank’s routing number and your account number (your bank may take up to three days to verify with this method).
■ If you choose Instant Verification, tap “Continue” twice to acknowledge that Venmo uses Plaid, an outside application, to connect to your bank.
■ Select your bank from those listed. If you do not see the name of your bank, you may search for it using the search bar at the top of the screen. If it does not appear, go back to step 3 and select “Manual Verification.”
■ Enter your online banking credentials to connect Venmo to your bank account.
■ Follow your bank’s on-screen instructions to verify.
Venmo Sign up $10
Eligible Participant: Open only to individuals who;
(1) are residents of any one (1) of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia,
(2) are eighteen (18) years of age or older, and
(3) create a new U.S. Venmo account (“Valid Account”)
(4) view an onsite banner, or click through a social or paid media asset from Venmo highlighting the introductory offer ( “Invitation”), (eligibility for/those who receive the Rewards will be determined solely by Venmo) (“Eligible Participant”). Business profiles are not eligible for this offer.

Offer Period: Starts on March 1, 2023, at 12:00:00 a.m. Pacific Time (“PT”) and ends December 31, 2023, at 11:59:59 p.m. PT or until we reach the maximum Rewards (defined below) of 10,000, whichever comes first (“Offer Period”).
How it Works:
An Eligible Participant must successfully complete the following to qualify for a Reward (defined below):
- Sign up for a Valid Account in the app, and
- Make sure to add and verify your phone number for your new Valid Account, and
- When prompted to, you must also enter and save your promo code in the app during sign up.
Once sign up has been successfully completed and verified by Venmo, $10.00 (Ten) USD will be sent to Eligible Participant’s Valid Account (“Reward”). Reward should be added to Eligible Participant’s Valid Account within ten (10) days but may take up to fourteen (14) days. There are only 10,000 Reward available during the Offer Period; Rewards will no longer be available once the limit is reached. There is a limit of one (1) Reward per Valid Account. All steps must be completed prior to Venmo’s suspension, cancellation, or modification of the offer, if any.
Venmo Fees
If you want to see if your card carries a fee, you can do so in the Venmo app:
- Go to the Me tab
- Go to the Wallet section
- Tap on the card under “Banks and cards”
You’ll see information about potential fees listed under the card.
Some credit card providers charge cash advance fees (possibly including an additional dollar amount or percent rate, in addition to other possible cash advance service fees, including a higher APR) if you use your credit card to make payments to friends on Venmo. Is Venmo Safe?
Generally, Venmo is considered safe. Venmo says it employs encryption to help protect your account information and monitors your account activity to help spot unauthorized transactions. Also, it says it stores your information on computer services in secure locations. You can add an account PIN code through the Venmo app to boost security.
On top of all that, Venmo protects accounts with multifactor authentication. When you sign into your Venmo account, you may be asked to confirm your identity by entering a code that Venmo sends by phone or email.
Venmo cautions that its platform “is designed for payments between friends and people who trust each other. Avoid payments for goods and services, unless authorized by Venmo.”
To further improve security, Venmo now asks users to verify their identity through the Venmo app. Without verification, Venmo won’t let you tap into a Venmo balance to make payments, but you can still receive money and transfer funds to your bank account.
You’ll need a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) to verify your Venmo account.
How Long Does It Take To Send Money to Your Bank?
The time it takes to shift money from your Venmo account to your bank account depends on the type of transfer you initiate.
A no-fee standard transfer from your Venmo account to a linked U.S. bank account typically takes one to three business days.
An instant transfer lets you send money from Venmo to an eligible U.S. bank account or Visa or Mastercard debit card, typically within 30 minutes. However, the instant transfer will cost you. There’s a 1.5% fee (with a minimum fee of 25 cents and a maximum fee of $15). An instant transfer can be done 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What Are the Dollar Limits for Venmo?
Venmo imposes spending limits for person-to-person payments, purchases with the Venmo Mastercard debit card, online and in-app purchases made with your Venmo account and purchases with an in-store QR code. If you haven’t yet verified your identity, your combined weekly spending limit for all transactions is $299.99.
If you have verified your identity, your combined weekly spending limit is $6,999.99. This includes person-to-person payments, in-app and online purchases, purchases with your Venmo Mastercard debit card and purchases using an in-store QR code. The weekly limit for person-to-person payments is $4,999.99.
In addition, you’re limited to $20,000 in cryptocurrency purchases per week and $50,000 in cryptocurrency purchases in a 12-month period. Venmo also restricts how much money you can add to or transfer from your account. If Venmo permits you to add money from a linked bank account, the weekly limit on how much you can transfer from your bank account into Venmo is typically $1,500.
If your identity hasn’t been verified yet, the limit on funds you can send from Venmo to your bank account is typically $999.99 a week. Once you confirm your identity, you can transfer up to $19,999.99 a week to your bank account. The one-time transfer limit is $2,999.99. Instant transfers are limited to at least 26 cents and above. Standard transfers can be made for 25 cents or less.
How to Invite Friends on Venmo
Tired of asking your friends to pay you back? Good news – there are a few ways that you can invite your friends to use Venmo!
New user payments
The easiest way to invite your friends to use Venmo is by sending them a payment using their phone number or email address. This recipient will show up in your feed as a New User until your friend signs up. Once you’ve sent the payment they’ll get an email or text with a link to sign up and accept the funds that you sent them. If they are having any trouble locating that payment, please have them reach out to us directly and we’ll be happy to help out.
Remember that you can always cancel/take back a payment you sent to a New User as long as they haven’t accepted the payment yet.
Invite reminders
When you invite your friends to sign up for Venmo, we’ll send them an email containing a link they can use to sign up. If they don’t sign up after a period of time, we’ll send them a reminder of your invite. This option, along with other notifications and alerts can be turned off by customizing your notifications:

I’m trying to sign in, but Venmo is sending a code to an old phone number I no longer have.
If you no longer have the phone number on file with your account:
- Sign in from a phone or computer that you’ve previously used to access Venmo. You may be able to skip the security code challenge, and you can update your phone number once you sign in.
- If you see “Other options to confirm your identity…”, select it.
- Otherwise, follow the instructions in this article to update your phone number.
If you do have the same phone number:
- Sometimes emails and text messages are delayed. If you don’t receive a code within 10 minutes, tap “Send code again”. You can also check your spam or junk folder for a code sent to your email address.
- Codes are only valid for a limited period of time. If the code you received isn’t working, try signing in again to generate a new code.
Venmo is sending a code to a phone number I don’t recognize
Don’t worry: Without your password, whoever received the code will not be able to access your Venmo account (neither personal nor business profile). If you’re concerned that the recipient of the code knows your password, you can reset your password.

Why did Venmo send me a transaction history email?
Venmo sends this email to remind our users to check their transaction histories on a regular basis. If you have been active on Venmo (i.e. made or received a payment, made a purchase, transferred to bank, or received credits/refunds) in the past month, you will receive a notice at the beginning of the following month. Otherwise, you will receive this notice once per quarter at minimum.
Can I unsubscribe or opt out of Venmo emails?
Venmo is required by federal financial regulations to send this notice to you on a regular basis, so unfortunately you cannot unsubscribe.
If you close your Venmo account, we’ll send one final transaction history email to the email address on file with your Venmo account.
I received this email, but I don’t have a Venmo account
It’s possible you have an old Venmo account, or that you tried to close your account but didn’t finish. You can go to venmo.com/account/settings/cancel to close an account.
